An informal and friendly prose writing class, suitable for all levels that allow you to practice different fictional techniques (also relevant to life writing). I provide weekly writing prompts that cover basic fictional techniques but you are welcome to work on your own project if you have one. Many of the students in this class are working on long projects like novels, memoirs or autobiographies.
Each person has a 15 to 20 minute slot in which to read up to 1000 words in class and receive verbal feedback. I also given detailed written feedback keeping the bigger issues of structure and plot in mind. We will cover all the technical aspects of writing, like characterisation, voice, dialogue, narrative time, point of view, etc., with explanations where necessary, and more general discussion, or short writing exercises where time allows.
This is a very friendly and supportive mixed ability group in which everyone works at their own level. Some people are just setting out, others may have been published, had stories on radio, or won competitions, while others are writing for their own satisfaction, or because they enjoy the mental stimulation and social contact. Beginners benefit from the expertise and feedback of more experienced writers and longer-standing members enjoy the variety and fresh feedback from new members. Everyone's writing is taken seriously, but the emphasis of the class is on encouraging each other, appreciating the unique character and experience that each person brings to the group, and enjoying ourselves. It is a very friendly and supportive group and welcoming to new members.
Cost: Autumn term £140; Spring term £154 (payable in instalments by arrangement)
